March/April 2010

There are a lot of looks you can get out of this most unusual fabric. Imagine it also with a skirt suit, under a hot pink jacket, the cardigan sweater over a plain black tank or camisole, the camisole with a long black chiffon skirt, and many, more more. Details about how/what to sew are also in the July 2009 issue to use a stretchy knit for the back of a tank or camisole so that it really fits close to the body but is still comfortable and neat.

The 1945A jacket is wonderful as is or with onseam pockets like this version to the left. (If the buttons puzzle you, it's because this is unbuttoned from the waist downward so you can see the bottom button, but not the one just above it.
With the wrap collar, you get the version on the right. Perhaps I offered this fabric in the wrong issue. It was in November 2009 but because it is lightweight and can be unlined so it's very cool in spring and summer, it would be ideal for right now through summer, particularly if you do a 3/4 sleeve and shortened it to hip length. You could layer it over the tulle lace camisole, or a colored tank. You're going to want to get out that swatch and take another look at it. It was wonderful to sew and has great body.

Here are two wonderful spring/summer lining choices in black and white prints. I draped the upper over plain black modern gab so you can see how it would look in a black jacket or black and white tweedy spring fabric. Over white, it would be much lighter. More information is on page 21 of the March issue. These would also be great in a solid colored jacket for a neutral but lively base. The bottom fabric is really more of a silk gazar--much crisper than a silk organza and consequently would be a great choice in a fabric that needed more body or in something that you wouldn't want to fuse underline. You can see how the graphic squares include the name CAROLINAHERRERA in the outlined strokes.

The Teal Basic Knit is turned into a multi-season wrap tunic made from the 1960 cardigan pattern. Just another way to use that ubiquitous pattern. So easy, you'll turn this out in no time at all or do think about making it longer into a dress, or shorter for a summer top with an elbow length sleeve.

Here's the Portofino knit stripe--the top portion is like the swatch with little white tufts along the edges of the stripes. The lower portion where the stripes are placed on an angle, it's plain. Same fabric, same price, your choice.
